In their final game of the 2019 season, the Clarksburg JV Baseball team could not complete a comeback against BCC before losing 8-5.
Sloppy defense and free passes allowed the Barons to jump out to a 6-0 lead after 2 innings. Freshman pitcher Daerek Sawyer battled admirably despite facing issues with the pitching mound before being replaced by sophomore Nick Shifflett.
Sophomore outfielder Daniel Parry got the Coyote offense going in the 3rd inning after being hit by a pitch. He stole second and moved to third on a single by Shifflett. Parry scored on an RBI groundout by freshman outfielder Gabe Torres.
Clarksburg chipped away at the lead again in the 4th. Freshman catcher Kurt Phillips singled to lead off the inning. Then freshman courtesy runner Nick Smith stole second, moved to third on a single by sophomore infielder Sean Carrier and then scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore outfielder Hunter Marsh. Unfortunately, the Coyotes allowed an unearned run in the bottom half after a missed double play opportunity which made the score 7-2.
In the 5th inning, Parry led off again after getting plunked. He then stole second and third before scoring on another RBI groundout by Torres.
Trailing 8-3 in the 7th, the Coyotes got a spark from their bench. With one out, Shifflett singled and then freshman pinch-hitter Diego Salcedo doubled down the leftfield line. Shifflett would score on a single by Phillips and Salcedo came around to score when the left fielder misplayed the ball.
Sadly the Coyotes could make it no closer. The team finished the season 7-4 with encouraging wins against a number of strong teams. Congrats to the team on a wonderful 2019 season.
