A great pitching duel between the Clarksburg JV Baseball team and Wootton took place Wednesday, but the Patriots took advantage of two Coyotes’ errors to win 4-1.
Sophomore pitcher Sean Carrier was fantastic on the mound. He threw six innings scattering 5 Wootton hits and only allowing one earned run while striking out 3.
Clarksburg was able to take an early lead in the 2nd when sophomore outfielder Arthur Merla drove in sophomore DH Hunter Marsh with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left-center. Unfortunately, that would be the only run the Coyotes could muster on the day, and Wootton tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd on 2 hits.
The two teams went scoreless until the Patriots broke it open in the 5th. With two outs, Wootton doubled down the third baseline. Then a dropped third strike extended the inning. After an RBI single gave the Patriots the lead, another error allowed two additional runs to score making it 4-1.
The Coyotes threatened in the 7th when the first two batters singled, but a double play and a strikeout ended their hope for a comeback.
After a lengthy break, Clarksburg returns to action against Urbana on Monday 4/15 at 4:30 p.m.
