After almost a week since their most recent game, the Clarksburg JV Baseball team was excited to return to the field and channeled that energy during an 8-2 win at Damascus yesterday.
Sophomore pitcher Nick Shifflett was electric on the mound. He struck out 8 batters over 6 innings while only allowing 2 runs (1 earned) and 2 hits. Freshman reliever Erik Bhattacharyya finished off the Hornets with a clean 7th inning.
It took the Coyotes a few innings to find their offensive groove, but they rediscovered their swings in the 4th. With two outs, sophomore outfielder Arthur Merla blooped a single down the right field line scoring two. After Merla stole second, Bhattacharyya followed with another bloop single to right to drive in Merla and make it 3-0.
Damascus got on the board in the bottom of the 4th thanks to some Clarksburg fielding errors, but the Coyotes struck again in the 5th. Sophomore infielder Kyle D’Attilio drove in a run with a long single to right. Freshman catcher Kurt Phillips followed him an RBI double down the leftfield line. Then sophomore infielder Sean Carrier drove in D’Attilio with a sac fly to center to make it 6-1.
After Damascus added another run in the bottom of the 5th, Clarksburg put it out of reach in the 6th. Freshman infielder Daerek Sawyer singled and stole two bases before being driven in by sophomore outfielder Daniel Parry’s RBI single. Parry then stole two bases and Shifflett drove him in on a groundout after a grueling extended at-bat in which he battled for 10 pitches.
Due to MCPS Spring Break, the Coyotes are off until next Wednesday 4/24 when they travel to BCC at 3:45 p.m.
