With a chance to stay undefeated at home and to take the lead in the 4A West Division, the Clarksburg JV Baseball team fumbled away a golden opportunity during a 13-2 loss to Northwest Wednesday.
The Jaguars scored on an error in the top of the first, but the Coyotes responded right away. Sophomore outfielder Daniel Parry singled and stole second to lead off and then scored on an RBI groundout by freshman catcher Kurt Phillips.
Both teams went scoreless in the second inning before Northwest struck. The Jaguars had 6 consecutive hitters reach base and scored 3 runs in the third. They would add another run in the fourth on an error against freshman pitcher Daerek Sawyer, who went four innings while striking out 4.
Northwest scored 3 more in the fifth thanks to multiple errors by the Coyotes against sophomore reliever Nick Shifflett. Then they added another unearned run in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead. Shifflett only gave up one earned run in two innings of relief.
Shifflett led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and later scored on a groundout by sophomore first baseman Kyle D’Attilio.
Unfortunately, Northwest added 4 more in the seventh off sophomore reliever Tommy Zinzi to finish off the game.
Clarksburg will look to bounce back Friday at Quince Orchard during an early 3:15 game.
