With snow flurries in the air during pregame warm-ups, the Clarksburg JV Baseball team started their game against Blair with a flurry of hits en route to a 10-5 win.
After the first two Coyote batters reached, freshman Chase Robinson drove in two with a double to deep left. He scored two batters later when freshman Sean Carrier hit a ball that went through the legs of the Blair third baseman. Carrier was driven in immediately on a double to left center by freshman Hunter Marsh, and Clarksburg quickly had a 4-0 lead.
The four run lead seemed like more than enough for sophomore pitcher Bailey Arensmeyer, who got through the first 9 Blazer hitters perfectly before surrendering a run in the fourth. Arensmeyer allowed two earned runs through 5.2 innings on 5 hits while striking out 6.
In the third inning the Coyotes extended their lead when sophomore Phillip Del Sordi started a two-out rally with a single to right center. He then stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a balk to make it 5-0. Freshmen Kyle D’Attilia and Nick Shifflett led off the fourth inning with back-to-back walks and both scored when Carrier reached again on an error. Carrier was driven in by a Del Sordi single to left and the lead was 8-1.
Clarksburg padded their lead in the fifth inning when freshman Morgan Bragg doubled to deep left center and scored on a single by Robinson. Carrier knocked in Robinson with a two-out triple to right center making it 10-1.
Blair knocked Arensmeyer out of the game after scoring once in the sixth. Two Coyote errors and a swinging bunt against D’Attilia in relief allowed three more runs to score, and the lead was trimmed to 10-5.
The Blazers loaded the bases in the seventh inning when Shifflett came on to close out the game. He immediately induced a ground ball to Robinson who stepped on third base and quickly threw to Bragg who tagged the lead runner and completed the double play. The next batter grounded out to second and Clarksburg earned their second consecutive win to begin the 2018 season.
Sherwood travels to Clarksburg on Monday at 3:45 as the team looks to make it three straight.
