Damascus High School
Clarksburg High School
With no outs and the bases loaded in the 8th inning of their game against Damascus, the Clarksburg JV Baseball team was able to plate a final run for a walk-off 4-3 win.
Freshman pitcher Phillip Del Sordi was masterful on the mound for 6 innings as he only allowed 1 hit, 2 walks and 3 runs (1 earned) while striking out 3. Fellow freshman Bailey Arensmeyer pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win while striking out 3 himself.
After trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the 4th, the Coyotes finally broke through against the Hornets’ pitcher. Sophomore Chance Leo led off with a triple to right and scored two batters later on a passed ball. With two outs, sophomore courtesy runner Ray Hopkins scored from 2nd base on a RBI single by freshman Christian Oven to give his team a 2-1 lead.
A couple unlucky plays in the 6th inning allowed Damascus to retake the lead and Clarksburg entered the final inning trailing by 1 run.
Oven led off the 7th inning with a single to center. He was then moved up 1 base on a great sacrifice bunt by junior Ryan Johns. Then, down to their final out, the Coyotes tied it up on a RBI single by freshman Max Bennett. The game then went to extra innings.
Three consecutive walks allowed Clarksburg to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. Sophomore Daniel Ward lined out to the Hornets’ pitcher who then threw the ball away trying for a double-play. The error allowed Leo to race home for a walk-off win.
The JV Baseball team has their final game of the season on Saturday at Wootton.
